Bergama...

Bergama is a town in İzmir district, located between 37.07 latitude, 27.12 longitude on northwest of Aegean Region of Turkey. Neighboring towns are Soma and Kınık from east, Burhaniye and İvrindi from north, Ayvalık and Dikili from west, Aliağa from south. Aegean sea coast lies on Bergamas southwest direction. Towns distance to İzmir is 107 km. and Bergama is located on seashore.

Town is located on the land of Bakırçay basin which is surrounded by mountain chains; Madra mountain from north ( peak point-Geyikli: 1051 mt. ) and Yunt mountain from south ( peak point-Maya hill: 1344 mt. ) Bakırçay plain is 45 km long and 15 to 20 km wide from place to place. Town centres' altitude is 68 mt, Acropols' altitude is 331 mt.

Bakırçay creeks' origin is Davullu mountains from 30 km south of Balıkesir. This creek divides Bakırçay plain; which is named after the creek, into two parts. Bakırçay creek is supplied with Glenbe, Aksu, Yağcılı, Menteşe, İlya, Karadere, Kırkgeçit, Gümüş, Kestel, Bergama, Sarıırmak, Sınır creeks coming from Madra and Yunt mountains. It is 120 km long and has an irregular river regime.

Mediterranean climate is dominated in Bergama which is hot and dry in summers, warm and rainy in winters. Temprature difference between day and night is 15 to 20 C'. Winds are blowing from north, northeaster, nortwester during summer and winter. Southwester and west winds are rain-bearing winds. Annual rainfall is approximately 600mm3.

Bergama is the largest town in İzmir; which has 30 towns, with its 1.573 km2 area. According to TÜİK 2014 data towns' total population is 101.813. Bergama is the 12th town among İzmir towns with its population density.

Bergamas' most important sources of income are agriculture and stockbreeding for along time. Most important agricultural products are cotton, tobacco, tomato, olive, corn and wheat. Agricultural soil and land structure are open areas for diversification to new investors.

Bergama has a rich potential about extractive industry. Mineral deposits which are being operated are granite, marble, gold, pearlite and stone quarry. Also town has rich sources of natural thermal waters and springs.

While Bergama Municipality was first established in 1869, Bergama has 6 villages. But after the law which came into force by the date 01.04.2014, Bergama has 18 villages in town centre and total village number is 137.
